Beyond the mean estimate: a quantile regression analysis of inequalities in educational outcomes using INVALSI survey data

چکیده
Background Learning outcomes are considered positive indicators towards future economic social and cultural opportunities of a number of countries (Woessmann 2004). Therefore, over the last decades, studies facing inequality issues in educational outcomes using cognitive achievement tests and variables from large-scale assessment data have increased. From a methodological point of view, the traditional approach used to explore the relationship between explicative variables and students’ performance is based on average effects within a classical linear regression setup (OECD 2012). Undoubtedly, estimates on average will yield straightforward interpretations but will represent only a part of the information concerning the complex and nuanced nature of the relation between predictors and conditional performance distribution. Essentially, the main concern for policy purposes might be not only to assess if the relevant variables carry an impact or not, but Abstract

Assessment of Risk Factors for Low Birth weight of Infants in Zanjan Province Using Quantile Regression Analysis
Background: Low birth weight is one of the key indicators to assess the health of infants, and appropriate birth weight is one of the most important goals of any health system which also reflects the quality of prenatal care. Objectives: The present research aimed to study some of the factors associated with low birth weight using quantile regression analysis. Methods: A cross-sectional s...
متن کاملFinite Sample Properties of Quantile Interrupted Time Series Analysis: A Simulation Study
Interrupted Time Series (ITS) analysis represents a powerful quasi-experime-ntal design in which a discontinuity is enforced at a specific intervention point in a time series, and separate regression functions are fitted before and after the intervention point. Segmented linear/quantile regression can be used in ITS designs to isolate intervention effects by estimating the sudden/level change (...
متن کاملSemi-parametric Quantile Regression for Analysing Continuous Longitudinal Responses
Recently, quantile regression (QR) models are often applied for longitudinal data analysis. When the distribution of responses seems to be skew and asymmetric due to outliers and heavy-tails, QR models may work suitably. In this paper, a semi-parametric quantile regression model is developed for analysing continuous longitudinal responses. The error term's distribution is assumed to be Asymmetr...
متن کاملThe examination of relationship between socioeconomic factors and number of tuberculosis using quantile regression model for count data in Iran 2010-2011
Background: Poverty and low socioeconomic status are the most important reasons of increasing the global burden of tuberculosis, not only in developing countries but also in developed countries for particular groups. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between socioeconomic factors and the number of tuberculosis patients using quantile regression for count data. Me...
متن کاملFunctional Data Analysis of Generalized Quantile Regressions
[To be revised.] Quantile and expectile regression are tail oriented conditional regression. They can be transformed as generalized quantile regression. Traditional generalized quantile regression focuses on a single curve. When more random curves are available, we can estimate the single curves jointly by using the information from all subjects instead of estimate it individually. To avoid too...
